Venue

Wentworth, NSW

Built between 1879 and 1881, the Old Wentworth Gaol is a single-storey brick structure with bluestone trim, designed by colonial architect James Barnet. Constructed using locally made bricks and bluestone transported from Malmsbury, Victoria, it was the first of its kind in Australia, setting the standard for subsequent gaols in Hay and Dubbo. The gaol operated until 1927, after which it served as additional classrooms for Wentworth Central School until 1963. Today, it stands as a well-preserved historical site, offering visitors a glimpse into colonial architecture and the region's penal history.
