Located approximately 40 kilometers north of Moranbah in Queensland's Bowen Basin, the North Goonyella Coal Mine is a significant underground mining operation specializing in high-quality coking coal. The mine has a rich history, having commenced longwall mining operations in 1994. In 2004, Peabody Energy acquired the mine, which encompasses both the North Goonyella underground mine and the Eaglefield open-cut mine, sharing a common coal handling and preparation plant. In 2018, operations were temporarily halted due to an underground fire, but redevelopment efforts began in 2022, including the installation of a new longwall system. In December 2023, the mine was renamed Centurion Mine. As of May 2025, Peabody Energy announced an extension of mining operations at the Centurion Mine until 2026, securing employment for over 230 local workers.
