Lake Nillahcootie, situated 36 kilometers south of Benalla in Victoria's High Country, is a picturesque reservoir formed by the Nillahcootie Dam on the Broken River. Completed in 1967, the dam serves multiple purposes, including water storage for irrigation and domestic use. The lake offers a range of recreational activities, such as fishing, boating, and water skiing. Anglers can expect to catch species like Murray cod, golden perch, and trout. Boating facilities include a concrete boat ramp suitable for various watercraft. Picnic areas with shaded lawns and toilet facilities are available, with access from 8:00 AM to sunset daily. Camping is not permitted around the foreshore, as most of the land is privately leased. The surrounding Mount Samaria State Park provides scenic views and additional outdoor opportunities. Visitors are advised to exercise caution during low water levels and be aware of potential submerged hazards. Additionally, duck hunting is permitted in certain areas during the designated season.
