The Murtoa Museum Precinct, located at 1 Comyn Street, Murtoa, VIC 3390, is a captivating historical site in the Wimmera region of Victoria. Operated by the Murtoa & District Historical Society Inc., the museum comprises four key buildings: - **Old Railway Water Tower (circa 1886):** This four-story tower houses the renowned James Hill Taxidermy Collection, featuring over 600 specimens of birds, eggs, nests, and reptiles from 1875 to 1932. Visitors can also learn about Dr. John Cade, a Murtoa native who pioneered the use of lithium in treating bipolar disorder. - **Concordia Cottage (circa 1890):** The last remaining building of the original Concordia College, this cottage displays antique clothing, histories of the first German settlers, war memorabilia, and a comprehensive research room. - **Concordia Bell Tower (circa 1890):** Once part of Concordia College, this historic bell and tower have been refurbished and are now ready to be rung, connecting visitors to the area's educational heritage. - **Murtoa Railway Station (circa 1878):** Recently refurbished, the station showcases the history of railways and industry in Murtoa, featuring railway relics and a model replica of the Murtoa Railway precinct from the 1960s. The museum is open daily from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, with appointments available outside these hours. Admission is $9 for adults, with children under 16 admitted free. Memberships are available for $14 (single) and $20 (family). Disabled access is available to all buildings except the upper floors of the Old Water Tower.
