Murray Island, also known as Mer Island, is a volcanic island in the eastern Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia. Home to approximately 450 residents, the island is inhabited by the Melanesian Meriam people, who speak Torres Strait Creole and Meriam. The community is organized into eight tribes: Komet, Zagareb, Meuram, Magaram, Geuram, Peibre, Meriam-Samsep, and Piadram. The island's fertile red soil and dense vegetation support a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Murray Island is accessible by fixed-wing aircraft, helicopter, or private boat. The island's rich cultural heritage is highlighted by its association with the landmark "Mabo decision," which recognized native title rights for the Meriam people.
