The Mount Roland Walking Track, located in the Mount Roland Regional Reserve near Gowrie Park, Tasmania, offers a rewarding hike to the summit of Mount Roland. This 16-kilometer return track typically takes 4 to 6 hours to complete. The journey begins with a gentle incline through eucalypt woodlands, gradually becoming steeper as it ascends to the plateau, which opens up into buttongrass plains and heathlands. Along the plateau, a platform with a table and bench seats provides a scenic rest spot. Beyond this point, the track involves walking over loose rocks and a short boulder scramble to reach the summit. At 1,233 meters, the summit rewards hikers with breathtaking 360-degree views, including vistas of Bass Strait, Cradle Mountain, Barn Bluff, and the Pelion Range. The track is rated Grade 3, indicating that some bushwalking experience is recommended due to short steep hill sections, rough surfaces, and many steps. The trailhead is accessible via O'Neills Road, an unsealed road approximately 1 kilometer from Gowrie Park. Please note that there are no facilities at the trailhead; however, toilets and picnic facilities are available in Gowrie Park. Campfires, dogs, and bikes are not permitted on the track. Weather conditions in Tasmania can change quickly, especially in alpine areas, so it's essential to be prepared for varying conditions.
