Moranbah North Coal PTY Ltd. operates the Moranbah North underground coal mine in Queensland's Bowen Basin, approximately 16 kilometers north of Moranbah. The mine, which began operations in 1998, utilizes longwall mining methods to extract coking coal from depths around 200 meters. With reserves of 261 million tonnes, it has an annual production capacity of 8 million tonnes. The coal is transported via the Goonyella railway line to Hay Point for export to international markets, including Asia, India, Brazil, and Europe. In March 2025, the mine was temporarily closed due to elevated carbon monoxide levels, but operations have since resumed.
