Along the banks of Burra Creek, three miners' dugouts stand as enduring symbols of the town's rich mining heritage. Constructed between 1846 and 1851, these subterranean dwellings once housed approximately 1,800 miners and their families, representing over 40% of Burra's population at the time. The dugouts, primarily located along Creek Street, were a cost-effective solution to the housing shortage during the mining boom. Today, these preserved dugouts offer visitors a glimpse into the challenging living conditions of 19th-century miners. Access is available through the Burra Heritage Passport, obtainable from the Burra Visitor Centre.
