Established in the 1950s by local farmers, the Matcham/Holgate Rural Fire Brigade has been dedicated to protecting the community for over six decades. Operating as a dual Rural and Village brigade, it serves approximately 700 homes in the Matcham and Holgate areas. The brigade's modern station, opened in 2011, accommodates three firefighting trucks and offers enhanced training and operational facilities. With around 20 active volunteers, the brigade responds to an average of 70-80 callouts annually, including bushfires, vehicle accidents, and storm damage. Community engagement is a priority, with regular street meetings and educational initiatives to promote bushfire preparedness. Notably, Deputy Captain Jennifer Farrell received the Australian Fire Service Medal in 2024 for her exceptional service spanning over five decades.
