The Maroochy River, spanning approximately 26 kilometers, originates from the Blackall Range and flows eastward through Eumundi, eventually reaching the sea at Cotton Tree, Maroochydore. Its catchment area encompasses 630 square kilometers, supporting diverse ecosystems such as mangrove forests, tidal wetlands, and estuaries. This rich environment is home to a variety of wildlife, including ospreys, kingfishers, black swans, fish, crabs, and occasional dolphins. The river offers numerous recreational activities, including the Maroochy River Canoe Trail, which spans about 30 kilometers and caters to paddlers of all skill levels. Visitors can also enjoy fishing, boating, and exploring scenic spots like Chambers Island, accessible via a pedestrian bridge from Maroochydore. The Maroochy River holds cultural significance, with its name derived from the Indigenous Turrbal people's term for a black swan, 'marutchi.' The area is also part of a blue carbon initiative aimed at preserving the natural ecosystem of the wetland areas while improving human and environmental health.
