The Leigh Creek Coalfield, located approximately 550 km north of Adelaide in the northern Flinders Ranges, was a significant source of low-grade, sub-bituminous coal. Established in 1941, the mine supplied coal to power stations in Port Augusta, producing over 2.5 million tonnes annually. Mining operations ceased in November 2015 due to economic factors, and the site underwent rehabilitation. As of January 2024, the South Australian Government assumed full management of the former coalfield, focusing on monitoring and addressing spontaneous combustion outbreaks. The site remains closed to the public due to safety concerns.
