Lake Margaret, TAS

Nestled in Tasmania's rugged west coast, the Lake Margaret Power Station is a historic hydroelectric facility that began operations in 1914. Originally constructed by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company to power local mining operations, it now stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering. The station comprises two distinct plants: the Upper Lake Margaret Power Station, featuring seven Pelton turbines with a combined capacity of 8.4 MW, and the Lower Lake Margaret mini-hydro, equipped with a single Turgo turbine generating 3.2 MW. After a significant refurbishment, the Upper Station was recommissioned in 2009, and the Lower Station in 2010. Today, the site offers guided tours, allowing visitors to explore its rich history and the surrounding natural beauty.
