Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, located approximately 770 km north of Adelaide, is Australia's largest salt lake and the continent's lowest point at 15.2 meters below sea level. This vast, arid landscape is renowned for its dramatic contrasts, where salt-crusted plains can transform into an immense wetland teeming with birdlife after heavy rains. The park is co-managed with the Arabana and Dieri peoples, safeguarding its rich Aboriginal heritage and natural environments. Visitors can experience the park's beauty by camping beneath star-filled skies, photographing the shimmering lake at sunrise, or marveling at flocks of waterbirds when the salt flats fill. Access to the park requires a 4WD vehicle, and it's essential to check current road and track conditions before visiting. Recreational access to the lakebed is not permitted; however, visitors can enjoy spectacular views from designated lookouts, the Halligan Bay Campground, or from the air. Camping is available at Halligan Bay Point, which offers limited facilities, and at Muloorina Station, a privately run campground 51 km north of Marree. The park is open year-round, but the Halligan Bay Public Access Route is closed from December 1 to March 15 each year due to extreme summer temperatures. Before planning your trip, consult the latest Desert Parks Bulletin for current conditions and access information.
