Approximately 590 million years ago, a massive asteroid collided with the Gawler Ranges in central South Australia, creating the Acraman Impact Structure. This deeply eroded crater now features Lake Acraman, a 20-kilometer-diameter salt lake at its center. The original impact structure's diameter is estimated to be between 85 and 90 kilometers, making it one of the largest known in Australia. Evidence of the impact includes shatter cones and shocked quartz found in the surrounding bedrock. The site is located on private land and is not accessible to the public.
