Battery Point, TAS

Kelly's Steps, constructed between 1839 and 1840, are a historic sandstone stairway connecting Battery Point to Salamanca Place in Hobart, Tasmania. Designed by James Kelly, an early Australian explorer and whaler, the 48-step staircase was carved into the cliffs to facilitate access between the two areas. The warehouses along Salamanca Place were built using stone quarried from these cliffs. At the base of the steps, Kelly's Lane leads directly to Salamanca Place, enhancing the connectivity between the waterfront and the residential suburb.
