Kaurna Shelter Tree, Brownhill Creek

The Kaurna Shelter Tree, a river red gum estimated to be over 450 years old, stands at the entrance to Brownhill Creek Recreation Park in Mitcham. This significant tree, known as Willawilla Karra Kuu in the Kaurna language, has been a focal point for cultural and environmental restoration efforts. Initiatives led by Kaurna Elders and community groups have included planting native species like yam daisies (ngampa) and creating a Kaurna Place of Reflection and Reconciliation with carved red gum log seats and interpretive signage. The area is integrated into the Wirraparinga Loop Trail, offering visitors a chance to connect with the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of the region.
