Iron Knob, SA

Iron Monarch Mine, located near Iron Knob, South Australia, is a historic iron ore mine that has significantly contributed to Australia's steel industry. Established in 1915, it was the country's first major iron ore mine, supplying high-grade ore to steelworks in Newcastle and Port Kembla. The mine ceased operations in 1998 but was reopened in 2012 to meet the growing demand for iron ore. Today, it continues to produce ore for export and for smelting at the Whyalla Steelworks. Visitors can explore the area's rich mining history through guided tours and exhibits at the nearby Iron Knob Community Tourist Centre.
