Moonta Mines, SA

Hughes Enginehouse, constructed between late 1863 and early 1865, was pivotal in dewatering the Moonta Mines' extensive underground workings. This classic Cornish enginehouse, named after founder Walter Watson Hughes, housed a 60-inch Cornish beam pumping engine that operated continuously for over 58 years, pumping water from Hughes and Taylors Shafts to depths of 366 and 768 meters, respectively. The enginehouse and its chimney were conserved by the National Trust in 1973. A walking trail offers access to the site, with interpretive signs detailing the remaining structures.
