Herdsman Lake Settler's Cottage, located at 180 Pearson Street, Churchlands, is the last remaining of 40 identical timber cottages built in the early 1930s as part of a government-sponsored land settlement scheme. Constructed from jarrah weatherboarding, the cottage features four interconnecting rooms with verandahs at the front and back. It was placed on the State Government's permanent Register of Heritage Places in 1995. Today, the cottage is home to Settlers Art Studios under a lease arrangement with the National Trust. The Herdsman Lake Bird Banding Group also operates from the site, banding nearly 20,000 birds representing 87 different species, contributing valuable data to the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Survey.
