The Great Western Bridge, constructed in 1927, was a vital link across the Spencer Gulf, facilitating both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Following the opening of the Joy Baluch AM Bridge in 1972, it continued to serve pedestrians and recreational fishers until its closure in 2017 due to structural concerns. Demolition of the bridge was completed in August 2024, eliminating potential hazards and restoring full navigational access to the eastern stretch of the Spencer Gulf. The site now offers unobstructed views of the gulf, enhancing the area's natural beauty.
