Glen Osmond, SA

Glen Osmond Mines, located in the Adelaide foothills, are Australia's first metalliferous mines, marking the beginning of the nation's mining industry. Established in the 1840s, these mines produced silver and lead, with Wheal Gawler opening in 1841 and Wheal Watkins in 1843. Today, remnants of the mining era, including the historic Wheal Augusta Mine Adit and the oldest remaining mine chimney in South Australia, are preserved in the G.V. Allen Mining Reserve and Mine Chimney Reserve. These sites offer visitors a glimpse into the region's rich mining heritage.
