Glen Helen Gorge, known as Yapalpe to the traditional Arrernte owners, is a stunning natural chasm located on the Finke River in the West MacDonnell Ranges. The geology of the gorge is thought to be 500 million years old, having been steadily carved out of the mountain range by the ancient river. The towering sandstone cliffs glow a bright red under the sun and transform into darker hues in the evening, creating a breathtaking display of natural beauty. The permanent waterhole serves as a vital refuge for native wildlife, including nine species of fish and migrating waterbirds. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the clear waters, hiking along the Larapinta Trail, or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. The area also offers views of Mount Sonder, one of the highest points in Central Australia, which changes colours with the light.
