Gladesville, NSW

Established in 1838 as the Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum, Gladesville Hospital is Australia's oldest purpose-built asylum. Designed by Colonial Architect Mortimer Lewis, the original sandstone complex expanded over the years, incorporating notable structures like The Priory, added in 1888. The hospital ceased inpatient services in 1997, and the 25-hectare site now hosts various health and community services. The grounds feature historic stone walls, landscaped gardens, and the Society for Preservation of the Artefacts of Surgery & Medicine museum, offering a glimpse into its rich heritage.
