Fossil Bluff Lookout in Wynyard, Tasmania, offers a captivating journey through ancient geological history. This 23-million-year-old sandstone headland, formed from thick sediments deposited by rising sea levels, is rich in fossils, including Australia's oldest marsupial fossil, Wynyardia bassiana. At low tide, the cliffs reveal evidence of fossils encased in the sandstone layers, and the beach offers a treasure trove of shells to discover and collect. A short, steep walking track from Freestone Cove leads to the lookout, providing magnificent coastal views. The area is also home to diverse wildlife, including dolphins, whales, seals, and various bird species. Visitors are encouraged to take only photographs and leave only footprints, as collecting rocks, shells, and fossils is not permitted within the reserve.
