Lytton, QLD

Fort Lytton National Park, established in 1990, is Queensland's first historic national park, featuring a well-preserved 19th-century coastal fortress. Constructed between 1880 and 1882, the pentagonal fort was designed to protect Brisbane from naval attacks. Surrounded by grassy embankments and a water-filled moat, it now serves as a museum showcasing Queensland's military and social history from 1879 to the 1950s. Visitors can explore the fort's restored gun emplacements, tunnels, and the adjacent Lytton Quarantine Station, which operated from 1913 to 1988. Guided tours are available on Sundays and public holidays, offering insights into the site's rich heritage. The park also provides picnic areas along the Brisbane River, making it an ideal spot for both history enthusiasts and families seeking a leisurely outing.
