Located in Fitzroy Gardens, the El Alamein Fountain is a striking modernist monument commemorating the Australian Imperial Forces 9th Division's role in World War II. Designed by architect Robert Woodward and unveiled in 1961, the fountain features a spherical bronze head with 211 radially arranged 'stalks' forming a dandelion-like shape. Water flows from hundreds of outlets, creating a mist that cascades over four terraced pools. At night, the fountain is illuminated, offering a captivating display. Its unique design has become an iconic symbol of Kings Cross.
