Dirk Hartog Island, WA

Dirk Hartog Island, also known as Wirruwana, is Australia's largest and westernmost island, spanning approximately 80 kilometers in length and 620 square kilometers in area. Located within the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, it holds significant historical and ecological importance. In 1616, Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog made the first recorded European landing on Australian soil here, leaving behind a pewter plate that remains a testament to early exploration. The island's diverse landscapes range from steep cliffs on the western side to sheltered beaches and shallow bays on the eastern coast. Its unique flora and fauna include the endemic black and white fairy-wren and the sandhill frog. The "Return to 1616" ecological restoration project has successfully eradicated feral animals, paving the way for the reintroduction of native species. Visitors can access the island via private boat, commercial barge from Steep Point, or light aircraft charter. Once there, activities such as four-wheel driving, snorkeling, and exploring historical sites like Cape Inscription and the old shearing shed await. Accommodations range from camping under the stars to stays at the eco-friendly Island Lodge, offering a unique and immersive experience in this pristine wilderness.
