The Dandongadale River meanders through a deep valley adorned with dense forests, featuring a narrow, rock and gravel bed. Its small catchment area, predominantly Crown Land, experiences low flows during summer. Accessing the river involves a walk along a track starting from the road bridge near the junction of the Rose River. The river is home to small brown and rainbow trout, averaging 220 grams upstream and reaching up to 1.4 kilograms in the lower reaches. Other species include blackfish, redfin, mountain galaxias, and possibly Macquarie perch and trout cod. Notably, Macquarie perch and trout cod were stocked in 1992-93 and 1993-94, respectively; both species are protected and must be returned to the water if caught.
