Cultana, located on the northeastern Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, encompasses the expansive Cultana Training Area, the largest of its kind in the state. This area is utilized by the Australian Army for a variety of training activities, including combined arms manoeuvring, live firing exercises, and electronic warfare training. The training area extends from El Alamein Camp near Port Augusta in the north to Port Bonython and Point Lowly in the south, incorporating coastal regions in between. In 2014, the South Australian Government granted the Department of Defence a lease to expand the Cultana Training Area, combining six pastoral leases into a single government lease. This expansion has significantly increased the training area's capacity, supporting the operational needs of the 1st Brigade and the 7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. The Cultana Training Area is also notable for its proximity to the former Baxter Detention Centre, which operated from 2002 to 2007. Additionally, the area has been considered for renewable energy projects, such as the proposed Cultana Pumped Hydro Energy Storage facility, which aims to generate 225 MW of electricity using seawater.
