Cowcowing Lakes, situated approximately 26 kilometers north of Wyalkatchem on the Wyalkatchem Koorda Road, is a vast saltpan spanning around 15,000 hectares. This expansive area undergoes seasonal transformations, shifting from a wetland teeming with salt-tolerant vegetation to a dry, cracked crust during the summer months. The lake's dynamic ecosystem serves as a natural conduit, returning salts deposited by rainfall back to the ocean. The name "Cowcowing" is of Aboriginal origin, first recorded by explorers in 1854, though its exact meaning remains unknown.
