Cowcowing Lakes

Cowcowing Lakes, situated approximately 26 kilometers north of Wyalkatchem along the Wyalkatchem Koorda Road, is a vast saltpan spanning about 15,000 hectares. This expansive landscape undergoes seasonal transformations, shifting from a wetland teeming with salt-tolerant vegetation to a dry, cracked salt crust during the summer months. The lake's dynamic cycles play a crucial role in the natural process of returning salts deposited by rainfall back to the ocean. The name "Cowcowing" is of Aboriginal origin, first recorded by explorers in 1854, though its exact meaning remains unknown.
