Cosmo Newberry, also known as Yilka, is a vibrant Aboriginal community located approximately 1,036 kilometers east of Perth, between Laverton and Warburton in Western Australia's Goldfields-Esperance region. Established in 1920, the community has a rich history, transitioning from a cattle station to a penal colony, and later becoming a government ration depot. In 1953, the Uniting Church initiated a mission on the site, which continued until 1976 when the land was returned to the Aboriginal people. After a period of decline, the community was revitalized in 1989 and became affiliated with the Ngaanyatjarra Council in 1994. Today, Cosmo Newberry boasts essential facilities, including a health clinic, school, community hall, communication center, fuel supply, and a community store, serving as a testament to its resilience and cultural significance.
