Coober Pedy, known as the "Opal Capital of the World," is a unique town in South Australia's arid outback, approximately 850 km north of Adelaide. Established in 1915 after the discovery of opal by 14-year-old Willie Hutchison, it has become the world's largest producer of opals. To escape the extreme heat, many residents live in underground homes called "dugouts," maintaining a constant temperature of 23-25°C year-round. The town offers attractions like the Old Timers Mine, Umoona Opal Mine and Museum, and the annual Opal Festival, drawing visitors from around the globe.
