Chewton, VIC

Nestled in the heart of Chewton, the Town Hall stands as a testament to the town's rich history. Constructed in 1858, it is among the few buildings to survive the 1850s gold rush era. Originally serving as a community hall, it also hosted the Borough Council meetings from 1861 to 1916 and functioned as the local Police Court during that period. Recognized by the State's Historic Buildings Register, the Town Hall is described as "a substantially intact and rare example of a small town hall," reflecting the varying fortunes of the area. Today, it continues to serve the community, hosting events such as book launches, jazz festivals, pop-up shops, fashion parades, and exhibitions. Its preservation is a result of dedicated local volunteer efforts and government assistance over many years. A major renovation program commenced in 2011, with extensive internal and external works completed by 2013. In 2014, the Mount Alexander Heritage Award for Contractors for Specialist Heritage Trade Skills was awarded to the restorers of the Town Hall, and in 2016, the Chewton Domain Society received the award for the Restoration of a Heritage Place.
