The Central Plateau in Tasmania is a vast, high-altitude region renowned for its sub-alpine moorlands and numerous glacial lakes, earning it the nickname "Land of a Thousand Lakes." Situated in the heart of the state, it is bordered by the Great Western Tiers to the east and the Walls of Jerusalem National Park to the west. This remote area offers exceptional trout fishing opportunities and is a haven for bushwalkers, with trails leading to scenic spots like Lake Augusta and Lake Ada. Wildlife enthusiasts can encounter species such as wombats, spotted-tail quolls, and the Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle. The region's unique geological features include alpine tarns and the only alpine lunettes in Australia, formed by glacial action thousands of years ago. Access is primarily via the Highland Lakes Road (A5), which forms the eastern boundary of the conservation area.
