Established in 1926 and renamed in 1958 to avoid confusion with Carbarup, the town's name is derived from the Aboriginal word "Carbunup," meaning "place of a kindly stream," "place of cormorants," or "place of the stinkwood thicket." As of the 2021 census, it has a population of 112 residents. The area is predominantly rural, with a median age of 44 years. Local attractions include the Discover Deadly reptile education centre, located at 10 Wildwood Road.
