Cape Barren Island, TAS

Cape Barren Island, also known as truwana, is the second-largest island in Tasmania's Furneaux Group, covering 478.4 km². Located off the north-east coast of Tasmania, it is separated from Flinders Island by Franklin Sound. The island's highest point is Mount Munro at 715 meters. The main settlement, The Corner, is situated on the north-west coast. The island is home to an Aboriginal community of approximately 70 residents, many of whom are descendants of European sealers and Aboriginal women who relocated here in the late 1870s. Cape Barren Island's East Coast Lagoons are recognized as a Ramsar site, supporting various rare plant species and numerous waterbirds. Access to the island is typically via air from Launceston to Flinders Island, followed by a short boat or plane trip to Cape Barren Island.
