Cambridge Gulf, Western Australia

Cambridge Gulf, located in Western Australia's Kimberley region, is a vast estuarine system formed by the convergence of the Ord, Pentecost, Durack, King, and Forrest Rivers. This unique "gulf within a gulf" lies at the southern end of the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf in the Timor Sea. The gulf experiences significant tidal movements, with ranges between 7 and 9 meters, creating expansive mudflats along its shores. The surrounding landscape features sandstone hills and mangrove-fringed mudflats, offering exceptional fishing opportunities, particularly for barramundi. The historic port town of Wyndham, established during the 1885 Halls Creek gold rush, serves as the principal port on the eastern bank of the gulf. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the Five Rivers Lookout atop the Bastion Range, overlooking the gulf and its surrounding rivers.
