Cabbage Tree Island

Cabbage Tree Island, located in the Northern Rivers Region of New South Wales, is a vibrant Aboriginal community within Ballina Shire. Established as an Aboriginal reserve in 1893, it has a rich history of self-sufficiency, with residents engaging in cane farming and maintaining their own food gardens. The community is served by the Cabbage Tree Island Public School, which continues to operate and support local education. In 2022, the island faced significant challenges due to flooding, leading to temporary relocations and ongoing discussions about future housing and infrastructure.
