Bourke Historic Cemetery

Bourke Historic Cemetery, located at LOT 1 Gorrell Avenue, offers a poignant glimpse into Australia's frontier history. The cemetery's old section features graves of Afghan cameleers beside a corrugated iron mosque, one of the country's oldest places of Muslim worship. Chinese characters adorn tombstones, honoring those who introduced market gardens and established early Asian communities. The epitaphs tell of the tragedy that constantly stalked the western plains; "drowned," "killed by lightning," "murdered," "sheer isolation took its toll," "poisoned himself," "shot dead by police," and "found hanging in the bush."
