Balaclava Mine, located on Reedy Lake Road in Whroo, Victoria, is a historic open-cut gold mine that commenced operations in 1855. The mine was named after the Battle of Balaklava during the Crimean War, coinciding with the discovery of gold in the area. Over the years, it became one of the most extensive and rich mines in the northeastern district, producing significant gold yields. Today, visitors can explore the site via walking tracks and lookout points, offering views into the expansive open-cut mine. Please note that access to the open cut is now prohibited for safety reasons.
