Historically, it had a population of 565 in 2011, which declined to 6 by 2016. The area is characterized by its arid landscape and sparse vegetation, typical of the Pilbara region. The Angelo River itself originates in the Ophthalmia Range and flows into the Ashburton River. The region is rich in Aboriginal heritage, with the Ngarlawongga and Banjima peoples having dreamtime songs associated with the area.
