Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) is a vast Aboriginal landholding in the far northwest of South Australia, encompassing over 103,000 square kilometers. Established under the 1981 Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act, it grants inalienable freehold title to the traditional owners. The area is home to several communities, including Indulkana, Mimili, Kaltjiti, Pukatja, Amata, Pipalyatjara, and Watarru, with the administrative center located at Umuwa. APY is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, with residents primarily speaking Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, dialects of the Western Desert language. The land is also celebrated for its vibrant art scene, with numerous artists gaining national recognition.
