The town's name derives from the local Aboriginal term for "place of hot winds." As of the 2006 census, Alawoona had a population of 250 residents. Notable landmarks include the Alawoona District Pioneer Monument, commemorating the area's history. The town is situated approximately 35 km south of Loxton and 75 km northeast of Karoonda.
