The Penitentiary at Port Arthur Historic Site is a four-storey building that once housed 484 convicts. The lower two floors contained 136 separate cells for those of 'bad character,' while the upper floors featured dormitories for better-behaved convicts. The building also included a dining hall, library, and chapel. After its closure in 1877, the Penitentiary suffered fire damage, leaving only its brick and stone walls standing. Today, it stands as a prominent ruin, offering visitors a glimpse into the harsh conditions of 19th-century convict life.
