Stony Head Military Training Area, located approximately 29 kilometers northeast of George Town, Tasmania, serves as a vital artillery range and training center for the Australian Army. Established in 1966, it has been utilized by various military units, including the 16th Field Battery, Royal Australian Artillery, and the 2nd Force Support Battalion reserves. The area features a dirt airstrip, constructed in 1969, capable of accommodating transport planes such as the C-130 Hercules. While public access to the coastal beach areas is permitted, inland areas are restricted due to the presence of unexploded ordnance, with a fence and guard patrols in place to ensure safety.
