The South Middleback Ranges Mine, situated approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Whyalla, South Australia, is a key component of SIMEC Mining's operations. This active open-pit mine produces both hematite and magnetite iron ore, contributing significantly to the region's steel production. The hematite ore is primarily exported, while the magnetite ore is processed into pellets for use in the Whyalla Steelworks. The mine encompasses several deposits, including Iron Chieftain, Iron Knight, Iron Duchess, Iron Magnet, and Iron Duke. In May 2025, SIMEC Mining received approval for the Magnetite Expansion Project Phase 1, aiming to enhance magnetite production and extend the mine's operational life.
