Runnymede, a beautifully preserved 1840s Regency marine villa, offers a glimpse into Tasmania's golden age. Built by lawyer Robert Pitcairn and Dorothea Pitcairn between 1836 and 1840, the house was later extended by Tasmania's first Anglican Bishop, Francis Russell Nixon, who resided there from 1850 to 1862. Captain Charles Bayley acquired the property in 1864, naming it Runnymede after his favorite whaling ship. The Bayley and Bayly families lived in the house for over a century. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the house, featuring elegant furnishings and maritime collections, as well as the original 19th-century gardens, which include a carriage drive, historic trees, and a cast-iron fountain. Runnymede is open for tours Friday to Sunday, from 10 am to 3 pm, with guided tours starting on the hour from 10 am. Bookings are preferred. Entry fees are $15 for adults, $12 for concessions, $5 for children aged 7-16, and $35 for families. National Trust members and children 6 years and under enter free. The property is located at 61 Bay Road, New Town, Hobart 7008, approximately 15 minutes by car from Hobart CBD via the Brooker Highway. Nearby attractions include Hobart CBD, the Penitentiary Chapel and Criminal Courts, and the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).
