The Robe Obelisk, constructed in 1855 by local builder George Shivas, stands 12 meters tall on Cape Dombey, guiding ships into Guichen Bay. Its red and white stripes, added in 1862, enhance visibility from 20 kilometers at sea. Originally white, the repainting addressed navigational challenges against the pale backdrop of Long Beach's sandhills. Beyond navigation, the obelisk stored lifesaving rockets for distressed ships, saving many lives. Despite coastal erosion threatening its stability, the obelisk remains a cherished historical landmark in Robe, South Australia.
