Limestone Caves, situated in Kwiambal National Park near Ashford, NSW, offers a captivating 0.6 km return walk through a network of limestone caves. The trail, taking approximately 5-15 minutes, is accessible to all ages and leads to the caves' entrance. Once a mining site for bat guano, the caves now serve as a protected breeding site for the rare large bent-wing bat and eastern horseshoe bat. Fossilized bones of ancient kangaroos and pygmy possums, dating between 30,000 and 2 million years old, have been discovered in and around the caves. Visitors are encouraged to limit exploration to the first 50 meters due to narrow passages and uneven ground beyond that point. The area features picnic facilities and toilets, making it a popular spot for families and cave enthusiasts. Along the way, keep an eye out for eastern grey kangaroos, emus, and native birds among the cypress pines. After your underground adventure, consider visiting the nearby Macintyre Falls lookout and picnic area for stunning views of a waterfall in the deep granite gorge, and the nearby natural plunge pool. Camping is permitted at Lemon Tree Flat campground or Kookibitta campground, providing opportunities to explore more of the park's natural beauty.
